Melva had to say...

Hello,

I'm an English major currently working as a data analyst. Needless to say, this site is the perfect way to feed my creative side. I am addicted to reading!

Some random things about me:

Favotite Books: These are the books that I could read over and over. They aren't necessarily "smart" books or "classics" - they are just books that I enjoy.

  • Can You Keep a Secret? by Sophie Kinsella - This book cracks me up! I like the main character, Emma, better than the character in the Shopaholic books. This is definitely an indulgence read - and it's worth it!
  • Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood by Rebecca Wells - I don't have anything against turning books into movies, but in this case, the book is definitely better. You get a better sense of all the charcters, and there are some additional plot twists that they left out of the movie.
  • Little Women  by Louisa may Alcott - This book will never get old or outdated for me. It is such a timeless tale of girls growing up, trying to do the right thing and become the women they are meant to be. I feel so connected to the characters, even though their lives are set 150 years in the past.
  • The Outsiders  by S. E. Hinton - This is the first book that ever made me cry. I first picked it up at age 13 on the recommendation of a friend, and it still a powerful book for me. You don't have to be a teenager to appreciate what these characters go through.
  • The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants (Series) by Ann Brashares - I could read these books literally everyday and still never get tired of them. Brashares has got a knack for penning emotions in such a way that to read the characters' emotions is to feel them yourself.
  • A Swiftly Tilting Planet  by Madeline L'Engle - Charles Wallace is probably the most awesome character in young adult literature - at least I think so. In this book he literally turns into figures of the past in order to fight evil and change the future for good. I recommed reading the first two books in the series before you pick up this one . . . if you haven't read A Wrinkle in Time and A Wind in the Door,  then this book doesn't make as much sense. The whole series is wonderful - L'Engle was my favorite writer growing up.
  • The Wizard of Oz  by L. Frank Baum - This book has so many metaphors for the world, it's just funny. But the colorful fantasy is what really drew me into this book at first. The characters are so ironically flawed . . . Convinced that their greatest strengths are actually their greatest weaknesses, Dorothy, The Scarecrow, The Tin Man , and the Cowardly Lion set off to find the Wizard of Oz, who they believe can give them their hearts' desires.

Favorite shows: Charmed is currently my favorite TV show. I also enjoy Star Trek: Voyager, because it is the most awesome Star Trek ever!

Favortie food: Like 90% of the population, I adore chocolate.

Music: I make fun of country music (but I actually like a handful of country songs). Mostly I love music with lyrics that make you think (i.e. Lifehouse, The Fray, Dido).

Pets: I wish I had a dog, but the only pets I have at the moment are fish. But I love them! Unfortunately, so many of them have died in the past 3 years that I've started the tradition of naming them after letters of the alphabet, just to keep track (speaking which, maybe I'm not quite ready for a dog . . .)

Books: I will read everything once, at least. I am addicted :)

Meg Cabot

Ok, seriously, Meg Cabot cracks me up. I just finished Boy Meets Girl, and I loved it! It's right up there with Can You Keep A Secret?, in my personal opinion.
